There are certain instances when we feel totally blocked. Even though we know that we have to start or keep working, for example on our meditation practice, we might feel as though we’re unmotivated, distracted or averse to the work that’s in front of us. However, if we want to succeed we can’t allow this problem to stand in our way. What recourse do we have to overcome this counter-productive energy?
The solution is to be relentless but not in an aggressive way. We need to be relentless with our mindfulness. When we shine a light on the condition at hand, it begins to lose its power over us. Examining the feeling and its associated thoughts, we can see how, if we take the situation moment by moment, we have probably under estimated our capacity to continue with our task. In other words, the desire to procrastinate does not last long. The problem is that we often refuse to give it a chance to dissipate of its own volition.
If, on the other hand, we are willing to observe just the present moment without allowing the mind to stray into the past or into the future, we will be rewarded with important wisdom. That is the wisdom to know that even when we are facing difficulty, in the present moment, we have the capacity to be happy with the way things are.
