It’s amazing how bad we can end up feeling as a result of the most trivial of causes. Very often when we are experiencing negative feelings, we might still have the capacity to realize that there is actually no problem at all but that we are nevertheless suffering.

In other words, our reaction to any given situation is not necessarily proportional to the circumstances from which it arises. This realization, while interesting is not by itself of much use to us at all because it does not give us a way out of the problem. When the mind is irrationally stuck on a particular response, intellect has no power to dislodge it.

What does have the power to overcome those difficult conditions is the momentum that is built up from a well trained mind. If we devote time to training the mind in mindfulness, learning how to bring the mind back again and again into the present moment, we will have the tools to overcome all kinds of suffering feelings.

With this training intact, we are ready to turn a difficult experience into opportunity for learning. That would be a good thing because when we allow ourselves to learn and to grow spiritually, we can finally start to move towards happiness and away from suffering.
