Usually we know what we have to do in order to become satisfied but we may not be skilled enough at ensuring that we take the actions that matter. How can we take the right actions when we are inclined to procrastinate?
The first step in solving any problem is to gain an understanding of why it is occurring. In the case of a restless mind, the cause is that we have developed a habit of allowing the mind to stray from what is important. Even if we try to assert some discipline on the mind, the energy that we have accumulated will resist such a resolution.
By contrast, when the habit of heedlessness is allowed to dissipate, we are free to do the work that we know needs to be done because the underlying energy that pulls us away will no longer be there. We can then go about our business in a more peaceful and contented fashion.
The path to achieving this is simple but it can take patience to apply. It requires us to repeatedly bring the mind back into the present moment. Every time we get pulled away we need to practice bringing the mind back. If we sincerely make meditation practice a priority by devoting time and energy to it through regular retreats, it will not be long before we reap the benefits of a well trained mind.
