Whenever we find ourselves rushing through our work or from one appointment to the next, that should signal to us that we have an opportunity to improve. The feeling that we experience when we find ourselves pressed for time, is a kind of restlessness which arises due to uncertainty about whether what we are doing now is right.
If we want to overcome that restless feeling then we need to better understand what actions lead to happy results and what actions lead to suffering results. Then we can assess whether our current actions are right or not. This requires wisdom about what will make us truly satisfied and that wisdom can be gained only through insight meditation practice (Vipassana). If we have put a lot of energy into a direction which is not conducive to our spiritual progress we will need to be patient. The momentum or tendency for bad habits can be frustrating but if we can notice the restlessness as it arises then we also have the ability to let it go so that we can return the mind to the present moment.
This process of noticing the restless feeling and then bringing the mind back into the present moment is the essence of the Vipassana training which will eventually subdue our suffering conditions. Once we become familiar with the happy results that come from a well trained mind, we will no longer doubt the value of present moment awareness. Without this doubt, we will understand that whenever the mind is truly in the present moment, this fact is enough to ensure a happy result and the restless feeling will dissipate.
