The Buddha’s greatest promise is that there is a way to take refuge from the constant flux and turmoil of life. The main barrier to this refuge is our own reluctance to accept its existence.

Thankfully, the elegance of the Buddha’s teaching is that the method proves its own value. When we engage in the practice of insight, we can see that each moment in isolation is actually just fine. All our concerns are related to the past or the future — that is where all the suffering exists.

Once we can see that happiness and satisfaction exist in the present we can start taking steps to expand that experience and limit the experience of unsatisfactory phenomena. However, because the mind is in the habit of grasping, we will encounter resistance to maintaining our mindful awareness.

The solution to this problem is training. Over time as we train the mind through regular practice and seeking out instruction, we will learn how to condition the mind to seek out the correct refuge. The present moment can then pervade our entire existence so that we are happier and more satisfied on a day-to-day basis.
