A common misconception is the idea that pain is a condition that must be avoided or stopped at any cost. For example we often run away from the pain by taking pain medicine the moment a headache begins.
By doing this however we are continually unhappy because there will always be something that comes up to cause us to suffer. In reality these painful conditions can help us find ultimate happiness because if we can learn to be comfortable with these painful conditions that are inevitable in our lives we won’t have to continually be changing the way things are.
The practice of Vipassana meditation can help us become comfortable with all kinds of painful conditions by helping the meditator to observe these conditions as they actually are, and reduce the need to avoid them. I encourage you to come and see for yourself how to overcome suffering not through avoidance but through facing it.
