Sometimes it feels like we’re always playing catch up. No matter how much or how hard we work, it may seem as though we never make any real progress. This can be a depressing way to live. Thankfully, the problem can be solved not by addressing the symptom but by changing our perspective of the situation.

This problem of lack of progress can result when we are measuring our success using the wrong indicators. If we measure success by having less work and the work we do always generates more work then we will never feel successful.

But if we measure ourselves instead based on our understanding and acceptance of the present moment, we become less focussed on getting to some defined endpoint and more able to enjoy the journey. Similarly, the ability to appreciate the present moment is a habit of the mind rather than a state of mind.

How can we cultivate this habit? We do so by devoting time and energy to training the mind in this discipline. First we can learn to practice insight meditation by taking part in a retreat in which we are secluded from outside distractions. Secondly, we can make insight meditation retreats and regular practice a part of our routine.
