We are accustomed to looking for happiness in future moments or dwelling on what happened in the past. If we are counting on happiness tomorrow when tomorrow arrives, we are not trained to enjoy it but instead to look forward to something else the day after. Dwelling on the past only foments regret and lamentation.

Rather than fighting a loosing battle, we can make use of insight meditation to gradually learn how each moment in time is precious. The purpose of insight meditation is to train the mind to experience satisfaction in each of the countless moments that come to us on a day-to-day basis. Moment-to-moment awareness is therefore the most valuable mindset we can encourage.
