A common mistake that many of us make is to misjudge what is important. When this happens it can lead to considerable suffering because we are trying to solve a problem that does not need to be solved and for which there is actually no solution.

If we are successful in our worldly pursuits, this success can establish and perpetuate the idea that we can control the world to get whatever we want whenever we want. In truth, however, this is not the case. It is just an illusion that we have managed to create for ourselves. For example, none of us can escape the certainty of aging, sickness or death.

The Buddha recognized, that our difficulties come not from a lack of a solution to our problems but from confusion about the problem that actually needs to be solved. When the mind is in the present moment, then we can see that what is already happening is inherently satisfactory and not in need of fixing. The real problem is just that we are not observing it.

The solution that we need to work towards therefore is to train the mind to be in the present moment more often. That way even when things are not going the way we expect we can be comforted by the positive nature of a well-trained mind. With that well trained mind to fall back on, there are few challenges that we cannot overcome.
