Problems are always harder to solve when they are more complicated. If we have a pessimistic outlook on the world, we will tend to view our situations as exceedingly more complicated than they actually are by introducing irrelevant past or future concerns into our assessment.

The above scenario may occur if we have become infatuated with analysis as our means of solving problems. While analysis can have positive benefits in resolving our worldly problems, it is of little to no use in addressing spiritual problems. In other words, we cannot think our way out of suffering the way we might complete a math problem. Whenever we try to use analysis to escape from suffering we will end up worse off by complicating the situation.

The problem and the solution themselves are rather simple but executing the solution will require that we prioritize it. The problem being our lack of attention to what is happening now, the solution is only to pay attention. If we are willing to let go of all our desires and worries for a moment, we can see how the present moment is already good. Trying to analyze and think about it is not necessary and in fact is a counterproductive distraction.

As simple as the situation is, letting go of our fears is not easy. It will take practice and, above all, it will mean that we make our spiritual progress a priority over other kinds of pursuits. This decision will not be without reward. As the Thai saying goes, “where there is effort, there is success”.
