When things don’t go the way we want them to, it’s easy to get discouraged. But those are times when mental noting is the most useful. If we have trained in mindfulness, we will already have a clear idea of our long-term aim. We are driving towards a total release from suffering with gradual reduction along the way. These results come from noting and then bringing the mind into the present moment on a recurring basis.

There are so many other things that happen in our lives which don’t have any bearing on whether or not we are making progress towards our aim. Due to our habit of worrying too much about the future or lamenting the past, we fail to see that most of these experiences are irrelevant to whether or not we succeed.

The process that we use to remind ourselves of this is just the same process that we are training in — that is, we need to label happening and then bring the mind back into the present moment. This is the cure to the bad habit of worrying or feeling sorry for ourselves.

Whenever we find that we are having difficulty letting go of a particular problem that we’re experiencing, that is a signal to us that we need more training. When you come to practice a meditation course with us, we will provide you with exactly the training you need to keep your mind pointed towards enlightenment.
