Many students of meditation allow frustration to overtake them as they learn to practice because they do not understand the goal of insight meditation. It is unproductive to think of meditation as just another way to chase after a given state or condition of mind. In other words, happiness cannot be achieved through pleasure seeking. However, happiness and pleasure are already there for us to experience if we would only stop chasing them. A person will never feel at home if he insists on leaving the house the moment he got there.
The equivalent to home in meditation practice is the state of mind where you know what you’re doing. As the Buddha said:
When he’s sitting, he knows that he’s sitting.
This is a fairly simple concept that works surprisingly well if one practices it on a continual basis. In order to be happy, we need simply to train the mind through repetition to feel at home in the present moment.
