When the mind is in the present moment and we are aware of what we are doing, we are in a position to make a rational determination about what kind of results we can expect from whatever it is we are doing or refraining from doing. Conversely, when we are not aware, we are not turning the mind in this direction. Instead we are heedlessly following whatever feeling happens to be present at the moment with little regard for the long-term consequences. Therefore, present moment awareness is bound to lead to better results than a lack thereof because when we are mindful we are acting from a more informed position.  A person who trains in mindfulness is bound to be richly rewarded for that investment.
